Canada’s 'French Phenom' Rene Dupree

Bristol has long been regarded as one of Britain’s foremost wrestling cities and local fans showed last Monday that hadn't forgotten one of the most explosive stars of British wrestling, ‘Rollerball’ Mark Rocco, who was welcomed back to the ring at the Hippodrome Theatre, Monday 16 March, 2009.

The occasion also gave Mark a chance to meet Quebec-born Rene Dupree, another star upholding a proud family wrestling tradition.

Both men began their ring careers in the footsteps of famous wrestling fathers, Rocco starting while his dad Jim Hussey was still one of the foremost heavyweights, while French Canadian Rene’s father, Emile Dupree, had a career spanning more than 30 years in North American rings.

Along with a crowd of more than 800, the ‘Rollerball,’ these days a businessman in Tenerife, Canary Islands enjoyed seeing heavyweights James Mason (vs Dupree), Doug Williams and Gladiator Goliath in action, together with ’Wrestler of the Year’ title winner Dean Allmark (source All Star Wrestling, UK).

Rene Dupree was seriously pretty awesome in his contest with the dependable-enough Domino. Dupree used plenty of stalling tactics, but knew when to do what at the right time (this wasn't Larry Z-style stuff). He was easily 100-times more interesting than in anything I ever saw him do in WWE, and would be interested to see what he can do on non-ASW British shows.

Rene Dupree pinned the 'Dynamic' Domino with a top rope splash in 13:23 (billed at 19 mins, I believe). Dupree is awesome. He was really good in the comedy tag in Doncaster the previous night (in a match that featured the French Tickler, which was sadly missing here... ) but probably this fits him better.

A lot of people are worried about Dupree, but we saw him walking about outside after the show and he seemed fine. No limping or anything and didn't seem in any pain which is good cause he was awesome.

Moss suffered a nasty looking gash to the top of his head yet still managed to pull off an impressive 4 german suplexes on Moralez.

Rene Dupree and Prince Mohmed Ameen beat Delirious and Mad Man Manson.
Dupree was thrown out of the ring and smacked his legs hard on the guard rail.
He seemed legit hurt after the match, hopefully nothing too serious.

Sterling James Keenan beat Raven.

Darren Burridge returned after the match, challenging Corino to a match when he is fit to compete and Stone issued a challenge to SJK for the 1PW title.

FEEDBACK
Manson and Delirious were hilarious, as was Dupree. Ameen on the other hand was just boring. Loved seeing Dupree again! His dance thing is just a mark out moment . I was actually shocked that Ameen and Dupree won too.

The comedy tag was good, it was amusing, and Rene’s dance was great... the match did go a tiny bit too long, and Rene on the apron seemed to watch the match and think “what the fuck?” for much of it, which i think was the feeling with a few people behind us too. But yeah, i still enjoyed it. Rene fall onto the rails looked bad, and i’m guessing he had some injury or other as he quickly hobbled backstage and didn’t even act heel or use the real entrance. Just upped and hobbled off. Some woman next to us said it was a suspected broken ankle cause she’d been text from someone backstage but i dunno how true that is. Momed won, which means he’ll be back, hate this cause he’s shit and his material is so incredibly old it’s not even funny.

Manson and Delirious vs Ameen and Dupree
Funny comedy match manson was the best though. if the whole night had been shit that match would have still been quality to watch. Also good to have dupree as a surprise its good to have unexpected big stars.

I liked how there were wrestlers unnanounced like Dupree, Pac n Spud its better to have a surprise and it was good having a few of the old stars back.
1PW has pyro, theres a step forward.

Mad Man Manson & Delirious vs. Prince Mohmed Ameen & Rene Dupree
Eesh. This match and its buildup began at just after the ten o'clock mark as far as I recall; did nobody tell Ameen that there wasn't time for his long, drawn-out promo? Dupree was a good replacement for Basham and he did what was asked of him, despite still being slightly in awe of Manson, especially in the combined presence of Delirious also. As for the aforementioned maddened duo, their chemistry is evident, both in this match and in previous encounters for 1PW, and I certainly hope to see the Bizarre Lizard Man brought back for more interaction with Manson in future. Frankly, the only weak link in this match was Mohmed Ameen, who looked out of place and awkward. There was also a nasty situation at the end where Dupree's legs crashed into a guardrail, with his left leg sticking in between two, and I certainly hope he hasn't had any serious damage as a result. A decent comedy affair that just went on too late and a bit too long for its own good.

I believe 1PW has a training academy and perhaps Ameen should go to it. Appalling. Crap gimmick and dreadful in the ring. Dupree was entertaining and funny and played to the crowd. Delirious was hilarious, not the greatest in ring but very funny. Manson was manson and did everything the crowd wanted to see.

Not as good as the comedy match before, but Delirious still managed to stand out. I quite enjoyed Rene in there too. Delirious' "French Tickle !" spot was the highlight.

The comedy tag match was decent. I don't know why those fans in the front row constantly shouted for Dupree to do a dance AFTER he'd just done one for them, then wanted Ameen and Manson to dance too. Delirious and Manson should really be a tag team. Delirious running around the ring and the constantly tagging Manson back in had me in tears. Dupree performed the straight man role quite well. A good breather before the main event.

I like the powers of deduction and all that, but keep on guessing.`Mr Dupree is busy on Saturday. It's a pity, as we did actually consider him for 3AS a month or so ago. We hope to have Rene back at some point in the future though.

All Star run a ton of holiday camp shows they don't advertise on the website. He might be on one of those, he might be working for RPW or one of the other 20-30 other shows that'll be happening on that day up and down the country.

Pity as well, I really wanted to have a close look at all the new tattoos he's had done (he's COVERED in them).

James Mason beat Bad News Brown [not the former WWF guy, because he's dead]

Rene Dupree pinned SmackDown Warrior with a splash off the top rope.
Dupree reminded me a little of an early Lord Steven Regal in some of his mannerisms and the little kids in the audience took great delight in battering him with their foam fingers or throwing balls of paper at him.

Zak Zodiak and Marty Scurll beat "Oblivion" Nick Aldis and what was listed in the programme as a "mystery partner" ... Gotta give it to Aldis, he came across as a star in this match and he had some nifty Lucha style exchanges with Scurll. Young Zakary pinned Tagori after a splash off the top rope [the highspot of choice for All Star wrestlers, obviously].

Quick, but eventful, interval.
Firstly, the ring announcer advised children to "please stay away from the ring".
Of course, the kids ignored this.

Also, three young boys, who were all clad in Rey Mysterio masks and had been kicking, punching and diving on each other most of the night while their chav parents stuffed their face, watched and did absolutely nothing, wound up fighting towards the side of the hall. Inevitably, it ended in tears when one of them cracked his head on a marble pillar. Chav mother yelled at the boys, blaming the older brother for the dent in his younger brothers skull. That's parenting in Hull for ya!

Brittani Knight pinned Sweet Saraya.
Saraya was at her heel best tonight [and looking damn fine too! ] and, I have to be honest, when she got on the mic and said that if anyone boo'ed her she would "put them over her knee and smack their bottom", I did boo rather loudly!
Good match, Saraya had the mouthy [and quite frankly, scary] old biddies in the front row out of their seats as she was torturing poor Brittani. First time seeing heel Saraya live in many years, and it's always a treat.

Main event Barbarian Karl Kramer lost to James Mason [on double duty] and midget Little Legs [who came out to Blink 182's "All The Small Things"] in a comedy match.
Mason seemed to legit injure his knee/leg early on as he was hobbling very badly for the majority of the contest.

Another fun night of basic "heel v babyface" wrestling entertainment for the family to enjoy and nobody, in my opinion, does that style of wrestling better than Dicko's crew.

Dupree hingegen fand ich richtig geil, sehr Gute Performance super Ausstrahlung. Bitte wieder buchen!.

Der beste Kampf des Abends war meiner Meinung nach der Streetfight, auch wenn ich wegen der Leute vor mir, nur die Hälfte gesehen hab. Hatte Dupree bisher noch nicht bei der EWP gesehen, hat mir aber sehr gut gefallen und würde ihn gern häufiger in Hannover sehen.

The best fight of the night was, in my opinion, the Street Fight, even if I only half saw it because of the people in front of me. Dupree had not been seen much in EWP, but I really liked him and would like to see him much more often in Hannover.

der Streetfight war, bis auf so manche Regelauslegung auch in Ordnung. Besonders der Entrance von Duprée rockte. Erstmal Randy Orton Pose und anschließend mehrmals Triple H parodiert.

the Street Fight was great. Especially the Entrance by Dupree which rocked. First the Randy Orton pose, and then several parodies of Triple H.

Just after settling in at the start of his second British tour of the year, colourful French-Canadian heavyweight Rene Dupree has been called home to Canada where his father, former wrestler, Emil Dupree is seriously ill. The 24 year-old, a WWE title holder before he was out of his teens, hopes to be back to resume his All Star programme at Cannock on Tuesday 7 October.

Dupree senior‘s ring career spanned 33 years from 1956 to 1989 and earlier this year he promoted an extended Canadian tour paying tribute to Rene’s ring achievements. Before flying back to New Brunswick, Rene had time to revive his tag partnership with the much travelled Karl Ouellet, another star who made his name in WWE, and has now seen action in 15 different countries around the world. Ouellet is due to stay until early October and hopes there will be time for at least a couple of tag team tests when Dupree returns next month.

During the next two weeks Ouellet and the rest of All Star’s World Riot Squad will be joined by the Florida tearaway ‘Miami Bruiser’ Brandon Lee, a 6ft 4in giant who will be pulling out all the stops to make a big impact during his first taste of European action.

‘American Disaster’ Broady Steele flew home at the weekend after completing his latest British tour but, almost immediately, his place in All Star Wrestling’s transatlantic ‘Riot Squad’ has been taken by Carl-Pierre Ouellet. And the returning Canadian globetrotter will very soon be joined by his ever-outspoken Quebecers tag partner Rene Dupree. The pair made quite an impact in our rings earlier this year forming a combination mixing the experience and ring know-how of the much travelled Ouellet with the flair and swagger of 24 year-old Dupree.

Ouellet, who first made his name campaigning in Canada and the United States as Jean-Pierre Lafitte, has wrestled in 15 different countries around the world and fans still talk of his long running feud with ‘Hit Man’ Bret Hart that reached its climax in Montreal. Ouellet, now one of the few current campaigners who can claim to have appeared at two of the greatest venues on either side of the Atlantic - New York’s Madison Square Garden and the Royal Albert Hall in London - also hit the high spots with WCW when taking Kevin Nash to a double title count-out.

Since leaving the UK earlier in the year, Dupree has been featured throughout Canada on a tour paying tribute to his international wrestling achievements. Another excellent show from All Star last night, this time at the Bristol Hippodrome. Great to see All Star back at Bristol and they delivered a loaded line up in front of a huge crowd and a great atmosphere. Nice to see some of the regular fans from the Colston Hall days in attendence and really special to see Danny Collins wrestle in Bristol again for the first time in many years. Danny helped the regular Colston Hall shows keep going in the really low period of British wrestling (mid 90's) with a tremendous feud with Marty Jones when most other venues weren't running. The only down point of the show was the Flatliner Vrs Frankie Sloan which the audience didn't like - not sure if there really is any space for 'comedy' matches these days with a much more demanding audience and personally I've disliked the Flatliner matches since the first time I saw them but usually they get a good reaction but on this night the crowd genrally didn't want to see it.

On a positive note, the other matches were excellent and results were:-

Madman Manson's interview with Shiek was interrupted by Prince Ameen, who introduced Rene Dupree.

Sheik kept shouting "gimme a hel yeah!" and now corners Manson...

Manson (w/Sheik) beat Dupree (w/Ameen) by submission (on the floor, for some reason) after Sheik hit Rene with his cane and a chair.

After Rene rolled back into the ring he was surprise attacked by the masked El Insanico Hombre (a man in a lucha mask? the old Tom Zenk/Dos Hombres angle?)

Short and basic, but good fun.

Prince Ameen made his way to the ring and once again told fans he was richer than them. He tried to tell them he drove a Mercedes but was caught out by Manson who said he saw Ameen driving a Ford Fiesta! Ameen was not happy about Manson’s comments and brought out Rene Dupree to face Manson. The former WWE star made his way to the ring, Ameen stayed in Dupree’s corner as Manson had Shiek in his corner.

Match 6 - Singles Match
Mad Man Manson (With Iron Shiek) vs. Rene Dupree (With Prince Ameen)
This was a strange match to say the least! Rules seemingly went out of the window half way through the match when Manson was knocked to the floor by Dupree… A few seconds later El Insanico Hombre was in the ring replacing Manson! Hombre knocked Rene to the floor, Rene was put in the camel clutch by Hombre and tapped out

The match was short - that wasn't a bad thing, since the crowd was near dead on its feet from too many matches with too much hot shotting[the whole show lasted 5 hours]. With Manson as established crowd favorite ,I'd have liked to see Dupree use the occasion to make progress to bad-assing himself with the hard cores - gigging Manson and leaving him for dead. If only Gauntly had his thinking cap on frontwards."

The Sheik appearence was awesome - Manson was funny and Ameen coming out was even funnier. Lots gave Sheik respect and he was very respectful back. The banter was hysterical when Ameen came out - Dupree vs Manson was okay. Nothing great but Dupree seemed to take the steroid jabs in humour and have fun. Sheik getting involved was fun and it wrapped things up pretty good. Getting Ameen involved in this made it better - that guy's an awesome heel. The whole character is over like a bitch - more Ameen. I'm sold on this guy.

Hilarious! Manson v Dupree reeked of awesomeness. It was kept very short, and the inclusion of Prince Ameen and especially The Iron Sheik really added to this match. Sheik was great at ringside, prodding with his stick and then hitting Dupree with a chair. It makes me think that Sheik still has what it takes to be a manager, heck, even in the WWE he could do that role.

I agree. I think Dixon's roster is second to none in this country, especially at the moment. Great to see Jonny back in All Star rings too renewing his classic feud with Chad Collyer. I think the only wrestler that All Star don't use that I'd like to see work of them is PAC when he's back in the country.As for Dupree, he hopes to be here for all of 2008 if possible.

Opener was very good, as might be expected with two very capable wrestlers.

Doug had to do the Ric Flair tribute "broomstick" match with Smackdown Warrior in a poor match.

Tatanka looked good against Hannibal in what was an alright match in what was billed as one half of the double main event. Tatanka was very over with the many kids in the audience, and introduced as "The Legendary Tatanka", which amused me.

The other half of the main event was the tag match, was was mostly notable because of Rene Dupree. First time I've seen him for All Star, and he just oozed greatness. What was so awesome about him was how natural he seemed in everything he did.

His working of the crowd didn't seem "put on" and his selling wasn't just stupid mugging. It was a natural extension of his heel demeanour. It's like he was a cocky bastard without being a cartoon character. Two thumbs up for him.

Obviously he's working most nights for Dixon anyway, but Dupree should be getting booked for every other promotion who can get him. Also - Oulette & Dupree... pretty awesome team, when you think about it. La Quebec Resistance, I guess.

Speaking of cartoon characters, Flatliner finished the night with the "Send 'Em Home Laughing" match.

Break time - Promptly bought my back stage pass to be the only 6ft 2, 25 year old without a child in tow asking wrestlers to take photos with him..... Of course the regular adults would inevitably look at me funny for asking to take the photos but hey I think I can live with it.

Robbie Brookside beat Renee Dupree - Close to being match of the night along with the opener.

Lightning Kid Adam Davies & Ben Levy beat TNT & ? This was a nice way to finish off the night as everyone likes a bit of tag action but wasn't quite on par with the singles matches.

All in all a great show and it always leaves me wanting a hell of a lot more ASW. Its such a shame they don't run the Cheltenham Town hall more regularly. Its a great venue and has great family atmosphere. They seem to only do two or three shows a year there, all over the Autumn and Winter months. I don't see why they don't take a little bit more advantage of the town, doing maybe one more show early in Summer.

Huge blokes knocking nine bells out of each other all in the name of entertainment. Technically, it's not that simple, but that's essentially what we're looking at.

Who is wrestling? Big men in small pants and other chaps wearing masks and covered in spikes - ouch.
The competition features former WWE stars Rene Dupree and Pierre Lafitte, the Cincinnati Kid Chad Collyer, Metal Machine and the Brooklyn Brawler Julio Torres.
The home squad is headed up by Liverpool's Robbie Brookside.

It's all fake isn't it? Well, it's not a competitive sport but it is great entertainment. Is there anything else going on? If muscle men aren?t your thing, the Superslammers dancing girls are opening the event. Is it suitable for all ages? Yes, it's billed as a two-hour family night out so the kids won't get too scared. Can I get tickets on the door? Amazingly, it's usually a sell-out so you might want to book in advance.

The Cheltenham show was awesome. A great card and a hot damn near sell out crowd.... a great show up and down the card.

The current All-Star tour is the best one that they've done in years. They've been drawing sell out crowds pretty much everywhere they've gone and the wrestling has apparently been top notch. They don't really get much press though as they're not an internet-friendly promotion.On a side note, I'm watching Bryan Danielson wrestle on Sunday in a working mens club. Weird.

"Just got back from the Peterborough show, pretty good crowd in but apparently 'way down' on their previous draws there.

American Dragon Bryan Danielson (minus mask and apparently the sexiest wrestler in the World!) vs Mikey Whiplash - I think Danielson won but don't quote me, I really can't remember! I think I spent most of the match recovering from Danielson singing the US National Anthem .
Rene Dupree vs James Mason - Dupree definitely won this with his feet on the ropes, upon which Frankie Sloane ran in to protest, telling Dupree to find a Tag Partner for later on....
Metal Master vs Kid Cool - Kid Cool won, pretty good match, I liked Collyer in the Metal Master gimmick.

The hot business continues with All Star Promotions, which has had a string of sell-out and near-capacity crowds in recent weeks. The biggest crowd was 1,800 for a Liverpool show where hometown hero Rob Brookside regained the promotion’s heavyweight title from Broady Steele. They have also had attendances of 1,000 or more in Sunderland and Southend. The group is now planning to continue arena events throughout the summer rather than taking the usual summer break to concentrate on sold shows at holiday camps.***

1PW fans have a full day to look forward to on 19 April. The group is presenting a 90 minute Q&A session with the Iron Sheik, a ‘Fight Club Reloaded’ matinee show featuring all-British talent, and the main ‘Know Your Enemy’ show in the evening with imports Davey Richards, Roderick Strong, Tracey Smothers, Sandman, Rene Dupree and AJ Styles, plus a main event pitting the group’s champion Sterling James Keenan against the winner of this weekend’s Martin Stone-Darren Burridge match. The show also features the intriguing promise of Mad Man Manson interviewing the Iron Sheik. All the day’s events take place at the Doncaster Dome.

Children and staff at Chorley's Derian House Hospice got to grips with a BIG visit from some special guests this week.

For a group of top wrestlers dropped in at the Astley Village centre.

The hospice played host to some of the biggest names - and physiques - in world wrestling yesterday, Tuesday, February 19.

Members of the All Star Wrestling Roster took time out from their busy schedule of shows around the UK - they were at the Albert Halls in Bolton on Sunday - to visit the hospice to meet excited children and staff.

Among the wrestlers were Mr USA, 6ft 9ins Broady Steele, American Dragon Ring of Honour Champion, Bryan Danielson, three times WWE World Tag Team Champion Pierre Lafitte, four times Smackdown World Tag Team Champion Rene Dupree, and "Gangrel", the Legendary Vampire from WWE.

Accompanying the wrestlers were referee Alan McLoud and ring announcer Miss Letitia.

The wrestlers, some of the most colourful characters on the international circuit, appeared in their costumes and even had the opportunity to demonstrate some of their moves to the eager youngsters.

Susie Poppitt, of Derian House, said: "The children were ecstatic about the visit.

"They have all been talking about it."

She explained that the visit had been organised through Derian House supporter Mandy Levy.

Susie said: "Her son Benjamin is a wrestler. Mandy has been going to watch him wrestle and told him about Derian House.

"He told the wrestlers and they said they would really like to come to the hospice."

Benjamin, aged 18, of Chorley, learned his wrestling at the All Star Training School.

A legit UK promotion running lots of shows, drawing great crowds and by all accounts putting on entertaining matches brings a huge smile to my face. I'm such a mark for promotions other than WWE having success in this business it's not even funny. Plus, there's quite a few wrestlers that I like on those shows. All-Star Wrestling Report: Monday 11th February 2008

The roster ...was stacked and some of the stars in attendance last night included 'American Dragon' Bryan Danielson, Doug Williams, Robbie Brookside, Rene Dupree, Pierre Lafitte and Gangrel. I couldn't miss this.

The Empire Theatre holds 1,800 and I think 1,600 was the official attendance figure announced, so a good crowd was in. Sitting down in the upper circle of the theatre, I pictured and compared it to the setting of Monday Night Raw in early 1993.

As the curtain came up and the sparklers alighted in a way similar to the entrance of Chris Masters, the All-Star dancers started the night off with a number which was a much tamer version of Extreme Expose. Well it had to be really, as the event was very family orientated with the audience made up of mostly kids and families.

With the ring setup on a small stage directly below me, we were ready to start.

The show started on time at 7:30pm and finished at 9:45pm. There was a 15 minute intermission halfway through and the crowd were hot all night.

Five matches were scheduled with each match having a 20 minute time limit. Here we go.

1)"Filthy" Phil Powers vs Frankie Sloan
From the first bout it was obviously more of a carnival type show as anyone that wasn't from the UK or carried a British flag got booed. Basic opener with Sloan getting the advantage then Powers reversing the tide. Sloan eventually won it with a top rope cross body. Little to no selling from both in a sloppy match.

2) James Mason vs Gangrel
Mason had control for the most part as Gangrel played the part of chickenshit heel brilliantly while constantly jawjacking with the crowd. Gangrel refrained from using profanities. However, Gangrel did receive a public warning for a blatant kick in the balls. I don't know why it wasn't an instant DQ. The finish came when Mason Irish whipped Gangrel then missed a charge allowing Gangrel to roll Mason up and get the win with his feet on the ropes. Mason protested after the match and led the crowd in a cheat chant but Gangrel didn't come back out. The referee didn't reverse the decision either.

3) American Dragon, Metal Master, Rene Dupree & Pierre Lafitte vs Doug Williams, Ben Levy, Robbie Dynamite & Deano (Xtreme Dean Allmark)

This match was dubbed an 8 man International tag team match where the only way to win was to throw your opponents over the top rope. Basic tag match rules apply though. It was the USA/Canada combo vs The Great Britain All-Stars. Master and Dragon both came out in masks. Dupree played the cocky heel, trying it on and posing with the ring girls. Dragon cut a heel promo to start. He told us to shut up and show respect as he comes from the greatest country in the world (USA). Dragon then proceeded to sing the U.S anthem but kept stopping as the boos were putting him off. Master ended up putting his hands over Dragon's ears allowing him to sing the anthem in full.

Lafitte then started to sing the French-Canadian anthem but stopped before saying we didn't deserve it.

The Brits came out to a massive pop and they were all wearing red All-Star wrestling shirts.

The Brits started off well landing double dropkicks, double hiptosses and a four way Irish whip to their foreign counterparts. Deano then hit Dragon with a 619. Dragon sure wasn't working an ROH type match as he stayed pure sports entertainment. Still, Dragon was inexplicably the first man out. After a top rope backflip over Dynamite, Dragon missed a lunge and Dynamite threw him out. Enraged, Dragon tried to get back in only to be sent back over the top rope by a Dynamite dropkick. Master levelled things up by depositing Levy. Lafitte then caught Dynamite in a sky high/sitdown powerbomb before tossing him out. Deano levelled things up once again after landing sweet chin music and a second rope moonsault to Master. This left Master ripe for inevitable elimination. Dupree then got rid of Williams to leave Deano at the mercy of the Canadians. After a brief double team, Lafitte sent Deano to the corner then Irish whipped Dupree but Deano managed to backdrop Dupree out. It was down to Deano and Lafitte. After eliminations, the Brits stayed out whereas the heels went to the back but Dupree stayed out and hid on the floor. After hooking Deano's leg, Dupree held him for an open shot on the apron. Deano avoided Lafitte's charge and Dupree was sent flying again. Deano then pushed Lafitte out to win. This was the best match of the night.

Intermission was followed by another dance number from the All-Star dancers.

4)(Mr USA) Brody Steele vs Robbie Brookside(All-Star Heavyweight Title Match).... This was the only match which had no time limit. Brookside controlled the early going with solid matwork. Steele hung Brookside up on the top rope to turn the tide. Steele used power moves, a sidewalk slam and a chinlock to wear down Brookside. Brookside recovered to hit a tree of woe dropkick. Steele countered a cross body to hit a Mark Henry esque world's strongest slam for a close nearfall. The fight then spilled outside for a while. Back inside, Brookside managed to catch Steele on the top rope and fling him off with both arms to pick up the win. After the match a small pile of confetti went off in celebration. Crowd loved the finish. Good match.

5)The Bambi Killer vs The Fearless Flatliner
This was a comedy match which was designed for the kids. Think Eugene but on a funnier scale. Bambi Killer is an Austrain heel on his first tour. Flatliner is a big bald Johnny B. Badd type character who was very popular with the kids.

There was a massive queue to go backstage after the event and get autographs. When I made it through I just missed Gangrel and Rene Dupree was finishing up and looked a bit agitated at everyone crowding him. I briefly spoke to Doug Williams and American Dragon before getting their autographs and a picture with Dragon. I then spoke with Robbie Brookside for a bit about the mentions Chris Jericho gives him in his book. .......

All Star Superslam Wrestling at the Empire Theatre, Sunderland - 09 Feb 2008 by Danny Gray
First up it was local boy Tony Spitfire going up against Robbie ‘the Body’ Dynamite. In what was an uncharacteristic high flying ASW match, Tony Spitfire came home with the win after a cross body block.

The next match saw the dreaded Iceman take on Lance Thunder. Iceman made his size advantage count and got the three after a spine-shuddering lariat.

The third match was a brilliant triple threat match. Phil Powers, Germany’s Bad Bones and the incredible American Dragon locked horns. Powers was eliminated first by Bad Bones who villainously used his German flag on Powers nether regions to snatch the pinfall. American Dragon though battled on and with the support of Powers at ringside picked up the victory with a gravity-defying splash.

The next match saw Gangrel take on Doug Williams. Gangrel was disqualified for continuous cheating and the match went to Williams.

The final match saw a Canada vs. England tag team match. Representing Canada was former two time WWE tag champion Rene Dupree teaming with former three time WWE tag champ Pierre LaFitte. They ran down the crowd, their opponents and British wrestling in general. Chris Bambi and Xtreme Dean though had heard enough and hit the ring, and their opponents, hard. After a solid match, the British team shocked the odds with the victory they’ll tell their Grandkids about.

Today's show at the Southampton Guildhall climaxed with a gruelling main event between the duo of Rene Dupree and Pierre Carl Lafitte ('The Canadians') and seasoned indie fighters The Metal Master (Chad Collyer) and the 'American Dragon" (Bryan Danielson).

Master pinned Lafitte after a mistimed shot from the Canadian flag by Rene. Really fun, with the Frenchies being awesome dastardly heels and American Dragon (Danielson) and Metal Master (Collyer) doing the high-flying masked team brilliantly. Danielson was clearly enjoying himself.

Inaudible French Canadian promo, followed by “You have no respect for 3 Time Tag Team Champions!”. The Canadian national anthem then plays, interrupted by UK Dream Team’s entrance music. “Who are ya?” chants directed at Dupree and Pierre, Dupree wants the females to stop looking at his butt. “England, England” chant starts up as Deano applies the headlock to Pierre, “Deano, Deano” chant starts as Deano bounces off Pierre (after attempting a shoulder block). Pierre’s shoulder knocks Deano down again but with the help of Cool and a pair of double dropkicks the UK Dream Team take the advantage and clear the ring. Dupree gets his first public warning for double teaming Cool for too long; Deano angry at the refereeing gives the ref an earful which only helps Dupree & Pierre in double teaming Cool. Cool fights back with an elbow to Dupree and then finally makes the tag to Deano who quickly takes over with a Superkick to Dupree and a 6-1-9 on Pierre. Deano covers Dupree (Pierre accidentally splashes Dupree trying to break up the cover) allowing Deano to connect with his patented second rope moon-sault for the three count.

Match Time: 13 minutes
Winner: UK Dream Team (Kid Cool & Deano)

My Thoughts:
A good heated way to end the show. The fans were fully behind the English team whilst despising everything that the Canadians did (underhanded or otherwise). Power vs. Quickness was the theme for this match also, with Dupree & Pierre providing the power and Deano & Cool providing the quickness. "When [Rene]steps into the ring to tussle with Brody and show me some of the more complicated moves, I go weak at the knees and not because of any wrestling. Suddenly this assignment starts to look up as I watch the two muscle men strip to the waist and demonstrate their moves - all in the name of research you understand!

Brody reveals his favourite move is the power bomb - which sees the opponent lifted high and dumped rather unceremoniously on the canvas. Thankfully I am also spared that particular slam down and manage soon after to make my escape from the ring and watch from the safety of the side lines as the wrestlers begin their warm up for the show later that evening."

Last night in Southend was one of the best shows I've been on in years. ....The crowd of over 1,500 was electric all night long for the show which is how wrestling SHOWS are supposed to be..... I hope word gets out soon on the style of shows that All Star Promotions puts on because alot can be learned from them and hopefully help the business over here and in the states...The wrestling business is hotter over here than it has been since 2001. I think this is the year the business is going begin going through another surge. WWE, Mexico, and here in Europe is noticing larger crowds and better business. Hopefully Japan can pick it up soon again as well.

Awesome show. Amazing crowd. Best show I've seen this year by far, and best show I've seen in a few months. For the people who doubt TNA can draw 1000 people, just look at All Star. 1,500 people on a school night.

Interestingly there was also a big football match in Southend going on at the same time and yet still the show drew big numbers despite lesser promoters using this as an excuse for attendances in the past. It will be interesting to see if the return show in June can outdraw the TNA show just down the road in Brentwood.

As Dart said, a really good show with the crowd not letting up at any point with fans and workers all seeming to be enjoying themselves. Dixon continues to have the strongest roster in the UK at the moment by some way and I would think the Master/Dynamite match was as good a match as anything we'll see live in the UK this year.

Loaded roster there by the looks of things - hope we get something similar up here in Hull in a few weeks as that looks like a REALLY strong show on paper.

As has been said, if Dixon can draw 1,500 on a school night while a footie match is going on with Gangrel and Rene Dupree then TNA should have no problem with Kurt Angle, Booker T and Christian Cage.

Some nice old school heel work in the match below between Rugged Ronnie Garvin and Ric Flair, with one of Flair's signature almost bare-assed falls to the ropes that marked him one of the outrageous wrestlers of his time.

GOING NUTS IN THE UK

It seems likely that All Star Wrestling will tag the muscled man-mountain Pierre Carl Ouellet (PCO - read more) with the mountainous man-muscle, Rene Dupree on their coming English tour. Right-away, you can see the nut-crunching possibilities. If PCO can sell the lethal nature of his concrete head-butts early on, the scene is set for some very entertaining nut-cracking for the heels in true-blue British style.

Nutcrunch 1 - (photo below) British wrestler Steve Regal's favorite move - PCO's head is used as a battering ram on Rene who is spreadeagled in the corner ropes - a variation on Golddust's 'Shattered Dreams' slash 'Golden Globes'.

Nutcrunch 2 - A weakened PCO is whipped into the corner-post by his opponent. Rene comes in for the save. Rene is whipped face-first into a still groggy PCO in the corner - Rene falls back to the apron, spreadeagled. PCO is wobbling, wobbling, wobbling....AND TIMBERRRRRR!!! - the lumberjack crashes headfirst into Rene's nuts!!

Nutcrunch 3 - Rene is crotched on the corner post and drops back into the Tree of Woe, with his opponent doing groin stomp. Legal opponent whips PCO to Rene's corner, a drop toe hold on PCO, and PCO's head meets Rene's groin!!

Nutcrunch 4 - PCO and Rene anger the crowd, double teaming and entering the ring illegally during tag action. After some fast play, Rene is scoop-slammed to the middle of the ring. PCO distracts the ref, claiming his opponent entered the ring illegally. As the ref turns away, PCO struggles to enter the ring, trips on the ring rope and head-butts Rene in the nuts!!

Nutcrunch 5 - Hulk Hogan had his 'Hulkamaniacs' and, thanks to Stacy Kebler, Andrew 'Test' Martin had his 'Testicles'. Then Andrew dumped Stacy; (below) Stacy takes her revenge on Test's 'Testicles' with the 'rope ride rodeo', made popular in the UK by 'Tally-Ho Kaye'. This can be done singly (as below) or, in a tag match, with Rene and PCO deposited simultaneously on the top rope either side of the ring!!

Nutcrunch 6 (below) - a variation on the rope ride above - the 'bareback rodeo' (copyright Ric Flair).

Nutcrunch 7 - an extended version of the rope ride, perfected by Rick 'The Model 'Martel, as a heel-weakener in the final minutes of the match.

Bobby Eaton used this move in the US but its works more effectively in the UK where a long corner cushion provides a more convincing nut-cruncher. In a variation of this, Rene, having previously removed the corner cushion to hurt his opponent, ends up astride the cushionless corner post.

Nutcrunch 9 - turnbuckle crotching followed by a whupping - the technique was perfected by Rick Martel in his feud with Tito Santana, with believably heavy falls to the top turnbuckle;

PCO is in the tree of woe. Rene is whipped into PCO and falls legs apart. From outside the ring, the faces pull on Rene's legs until his crotch is in PCO's face. Each time they pull on Rene's legs he arches forward into PCO's crotch; both men are now headbutting (noggining) each other in the nuts (the double nut and noggin nogger). Repeat until finally's PCO legs are released. He wobbles, wobbles, wobbles ... and finally falls astride Rene for the 69'er!!!

BRITISH WRESTLING IN 2007/8

Since the demise of British wrestling from the mainstream, the business has revived to a degree. While still nowhere close to the glory days of hundreds of full time workers and thousands of shows a year, the industry is at its strongest point in at least a decade.

Brian Dixon’s All Star wrestling remains the most active promotion in the country, and arguably the only truly national group. While it has now virtually abandoned its network of regular monthly venues (only Hanley’s Victoria Hall and Croydon’s Fairfield Halls remain as semi-regular stops), All Star runs around 12-15 shows each month in towns across the country.

Dixon’s crew visits each venue just one or twice a year, usually selecting buildings such as theatres which have their own publicity staff to promote the dates.These shows normally draw well among families as an occasional novelty, and are not designed to build to future dates. Instead they follow a familiar self-contained formula pitting overseas heels against local babyfaces, often with the Brits tasting defeat early in the evening before gaining revenge in a show-closing battle royale.

The foreign tourists have included everyone from Jake Roberts to Shinjiro Ohtani, with former Quebecer Pierre Oulette and Joe Legend (WWF’s “Just Joe”) the current head villains.

The second string of All Star’s business is the holiday camp circuit. These facilities, which offer all-inclusive cheap vacations to working class families, put on a variety of free entertainment for guests. All Star visits each camp with a crew as small as four performers, putting on two singles matches and a tag main event.

While hardly shining examples of technical grappling, the camp shows are seen as an ideal training ground for developing crowd interaction skills, with the wrestlers having to hold the interest of an audience which may never have seen live wrestling before. More importantly for the promoter, the camps pay a flat guaranteed fee for the show, meaning competition to get the contract for each chain of venues is often fierce.

What is likely the second most profitable style of wrestling promotion in Britain is also the least widely reported. Several promoters tour the country running what are euphemistically known as ‘tribute’ shows, involving a cast of performers using WWE names and gimmicks. The argument goes that the term ‘tribute’ makes clear that no WWE talent will be appearing, and it’s certainly debatable how many audience members are genuinely surprised when they do not get the genuine article. But at the very least the promoters show total disregard for intellectual property rights, meaning that although they can draw large crowds, they tend to take a hit and run approach to promoting, hoping to keep one step ahead of the lawyers.

The claim of largest average crowds in recent times (though certainly not most financially successful) arguably belongs to the Doncaster-based 1PW. Launched in October 2005, the group made its name through a heavy use of imported US indy talent, often flying in more than a dozen performers at a time. While the shows often drew four figure crowds, the sheer expense involved led to heavy losses which brought the promotion’s parent company to the brink of liquidation. Having obtained additional funding, the group now puts more emphasis on domestic performers and maintains a passionately loyal fan base. However, 1PW maintains a well-earned reputation for wildly overbooked shows, with their recent second anniversary show running for a buttock-numbing six hours.

The rest of the British scene is made up of an alphabet soup of promotions with a wide range of scope, success and professionalism. The two veterans of the scene are John Fremantle, whose Premier Promotions runs a traditional rounds based style on its South Coast events, and Ricky Knight, whose WAW promotes across East Anglia and features his wife Saraya and a host of offspring. Knight’s crew, also regularly run the holiday camp circuit and have ties with a number of smaller promotions across the country.

Many of the remaining ‘new school’ promotions follow in the footsteps of the now-defunct Frontier Wrestling Alliance, which ran through the early 2000s and promoted a more modern internet-oriented style, peaking with shows in London’s York Hall and Coventry’s Skydome Arena. The remains of the group are now run by Greg Lambert as the Northwest-based XWA. Meanwhile, former FWA local promoter Sanjay Bagga runs LDN wrestling, which stresses the traditions of British grappling. Initially based in North London, the group now promotes right across Southern England and Wales, while its weekly television show will soon be appearing on The Fight Network.Daniel Edler’s IPW-UK runs along the South Coast, splitting its focus between local residents (with Big Brother contestant Billi Bhatti recently making his ring debut) and hardcore fans (co-promoting shows with Ring of Honor and Pro Wrestling Guerrilla). And of the remaining dozens of promotions around the country, the most successful of recent months is the Scottish Wrestling Alliance which attracted a reported 1,500 to Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall for its ‘super show’ titled The Gathering.

GANGREL LINES UP NORTH AMERICAN HIT SQUAD FOR NEW YEAR ACTION
Vampire Warrior Gangrel, one of international wrestling’s most immediately recognisable stars, is returning to Britain early in 2008 and will be leading a North American hit squad into exclusive All Star Wrestling action, backed by much travelled force Chad Collyer and Canadian duo Pierre Ouellet and Rene Dupree. White shirted Gangrel and Collyer need no introduction to home fans and Ouellet certainly made his presence felt in October and November.

After entering the pro-ranks in 1987, Ouellet was introduced to the WWF by fellow Canadian Jaques Rougeau after they met in Puerto Rico and their Quebecers tag team won the WWF tag title on three occasions during the 1990s. Ouellet also had a solo feud with ‘Hit Man’ Bret Hart that brought explosive confrontations in the USA and Canada before re-uniting with Rougeau on the World Championship Wrestling circuit where his solo outings included a double count-out matching with then WCW champion Kevin Nash in Montreal.

Ouellet’s wrestling run is all the more remarkable as he lost the sight in one of his eyes in a shooting accident as a 12 year-old schoolboy and even today sometimes goes into action wearing a distinctive eye patch. Now he’s returning with tag partner Dupree, a 6ft 3in tall, 250lbs contender who formed one half of the WWE tag team ‘La Resistance’ along with Sylvian Grenier.

And, of course, there’s the little matter of ‘American Disaster’ Broady Steele coming back to defend the All Star Wrestling British heavyweight title that he won from James Mason in Liverpool back in October.
